Right, i’m back on the music wagon.

This month I have mainly been listening to Adem and Lisa Hannigan.

Adem (Ilhan) is also 1/3 of Fridge (who Cam loves) although his solo stuff is fairly removed from Fridge-stylings. I was passed his latest album (Takes) last summer, it’s a collection of covers and there are one or two absolutely excellent moments – his cover of aphex twin’s ‘to cure a weakling child/boy girl song’ is beautiful and an inspired reworking of the original in my opinion. The whole concept of this album is fairly self-indulgent (covers of songs that Adem likes) and it does veer into pet project territory at times. However his first album (Homesongs) seems a far better representation of Adem’s “nu-folk” style, I’m particularly digging ‘these are your friends’, ‘ringing in my ear’ and ‘statued’ the slightly groove-y and looped feel of things feels similar to some other things i like (mum springs to mind – the icelanders, not my mother), although i hasten to add this isn’t to say the two sound particularly similar, there just seems to be a similar(ish) approach to structure and texture and…things.

I’ve been a fan of Lisa Hannigan ever since I first heard Damien Rice’s first album about 7 years ago, although she was always billed as ‘backing vocals’ i think she had a big part in making that album what it was (not everyone’s cup of tea i know but i like it). ever since she left Rice’s band (was she pushed? did she jump? do we care?) she has been quietly working away on her own stuff, i first got my hands on her debut album, ‘Sea Sew’ last year when it went on limited release in Ireland and have been singing her praises ever since. The album is a gorgeous, warm, slightly diy slice of folk-pop with quirky instrumentation beautifully complementing Miss Hannigan’s undoubted vocal skillz. Cam and I went to see her a month or so ago, Cam is now a fan. She is ace.

Also, this video is lovely.

I can’t remember if the point of these ‘ears’ blogs is to say what new music I’m listening to or just what music I like. My first choice for this month is a rather old favourite coming in the shape of Mike Kinsella’s most bare-boned project; Owen. Lyrically his work borders on diary book emo territory, added to the fact that it’s delivered with such finesse it can generally swing people’s decisions before they’ve discovered the complexity in which Mike’s music is based upon, as therein lies the uniqueness of his solo material. Guitar’s flutter, harmonic’s tingle and piano’s shimmer amongst various other instrumentation creating rich, warm compositions that sound like the soundtrack to hazy summer evenings. The music’s complexity derives somewhat from his American Football days, which accounts for the strong melodies that crop up throughout his solo albums, resulting in these characterful indie-pop delights.

Keeping things in the past lets skip back some 30-odd years to shine a light on potentially one of the finest pop albums ever written. When I first got into Fleetwood Mac it was after listening to the most bizarre cut and paste remix by UNKLE on radio 1 back in 2002. It used that killer bass line at the end of ‘The Chain’, which reminded me of Formula One Sundays and so I was prompted to go out and buy their classic album ‘Rumours’ on vinyl. Upon arriving home and discovering that the album is littered with pop gems including ‘Go Your Own Way’, ‘Dreams’, ‘Don’t Stop’ and ‘Songbird’, not to mention lesser known classics such as ‘Never Going Back Again’, ‘Second Hand News’ and ‘I Don’t Want To Know’, I felt that this must have been the best £5 I’d spent in a long time. All of those songs pretty much cement this album as being a piece of work that will remain timeless and illustrate as to why it’s the 10th best selling album of all time.

oops, almost a month since the last blog post (sorry).

Tv5 will be out on September 1st, at some point before then we will also make the b-sides from Tv4 available.

Last night we recorded the first session in the ‘new’ basement with Michael Rossiter which was a delight.
