check out the myspace (www.myspace.com/tapesonline) to listen to the b-sides from vol.2 (they’re ace).
podcast will be available tomorrow
last summer I was going to go and see a band called frightened rabbit, for a variety of reasons (primarily laziness and a “lack of liquid funds”) i ended up not going, but marked the band down on my mental ‘keep an eye on’ list.
i finally got around to getting hold of their second album, the midnight organ fight, and have had it on non-stop for the past fortnight. it’s bloody great! (and now makes me regret not seeing them in a tiny room above a pub as they are clearly on their way to bigger things)
i can’t quite place exactly why i’m so enamoured with it, it’s probably a bit more guitary and scottish than anything i usually listen to, immediate, and valid, comparisons could be drawn with biffy clyro and idlewild. Also the lyrical content, concerning the breakup of a relationship, seems, on paper, fairly mundane.
however in reality it is a glorious thing, part anthemic, part fuzzy yet with a number of beautiful elements, part lyrical. give it a whirl.
fifth music type=CIELOVERO (ace in space)
fifth art type=ash mann and his photobox
v2 has lots more of Cam talking, less of Ash talking (the public spoke, we listened).
all systems are go!
p.s. this also seems to start to balance out the silly gender bias that was going on. woo! equality! woo!

The brilliant My First Tooth will be featured in Tapes volume 2.
We would’ve recorded them last weekend but, due to Ash, the recording equipment ended up 200 miles away from the band (rookie error).

excited to announce that pilla will be featured in tapes volume 2.

i don’t think i can quite compete with Cam this month, it’s been a bit barren for me new music-wise, although i have been revisiting Jose Gonzalez’s excellent debut album ‘veneer’, i saw him live last autumn and i think that confirmed, for me, that this album, more than anything else he’s done, captures his voice and guitar playing at its best, in my view its far more delicate, beautiful and immediate than ‘in our nature’ (which is still excellent).

I love mix tape swaps. Its kind of like christmas, in the respect that you probably enjoy the giving part more than the receiving. Well not in this case as my brother made me a sort of shoegaze come drone come electronica-type mix. It features some awesome stuff like M83, Helios and The Album Leaf but then right at the end is a track by The Portico Quartet. Basically they are amazing and from these shores, London infact. Jazzy drones that recall Steve Reich and Charles Mingus and everything in between.
Also worth noting that Cursive have just released a new album entitled ‘Mama, I’m Swollen’. They played a track on David Letterman recently, which was a strange viewing experience. They kind of come across like a grittier Killers, maybe… Either way the track is superb and they are coming on tour, to Leeds, at which I hope to be there, wherever there may be.
