fifth music type=CIELOVERO (ace in space)
fifth art type=ash mann and his photobox
v2 has lots more of Cam talking, less of Ash talking (the public spoke, we listened).
all systems are go!

p.s. this also seems to start to balance out the silly gender bias that was going on. woo! equality! woo!

i don’t think i can quite compete with Cam this month, it’s been a bit barren for me new music-wise, although i have been revisiting Jose Gonzalez’s excellent debut album ‘veneer’, i saw him live last autumn and i think that confirmed, for me, that this album, more than anything else he’s done, captures his voice and guitar playing at its best, in my view its far more delicate, beautiful and immediate than ‘in our nature’ (which is still excellent).

Tapes volume 1 studio diary by ash

A brief recap of what we got up to whilst recording tapes 1

Day 1 – Sam Isaac & Jose Vanders
Sam and band, including Jose, arrived in their big, red van with oodles of gear (the joys of being on tour), which included Jose’s incredibly heavy electric piano. This was our first ‘proper’ session so we duly faffed around for probably longer than was necessary setting up, and tripping over, too many microphones and ensuring everyone was suitably fed (pie and sausage rolls) and watered (bucketloads of tea).
Sam’s session went swimmingly, he rattled through both of his tracks in a couple of takes and he and the band even treated us to a quick blast of a Ronan Keating cover which was ace.
Jose didn’t have any preferred songs to record so we made requests and she very kindly went along with them, again speeding through things in a couple of takes.

Day 2 – Ash Mann & Killing Fields of Ontario
The second day started with optimism all over the bloody shop after the successes of the debut session and true to form day 2 went just as well.
Ash put down his tracks in record time (the benefits of being a solo artist) and then KFOO (affectionate acronym) turned up complete with mandolin, tambourine and shaker. There were a few delays as they tried to give Ash a crash course in shaker-skills but he seemed to pick things up pretty quickly and soon enough their tracks were recorded and we were finishing off the last of the pie.

Day 3 – The Old Romantic Killer Band
Last but not least we welcomed Harry from the Old Romantic Killer Band into our bijou studio, similarly to Ash he put down his 3 (count ’em!) tracks in no time at all leaving plenty of room for him and Cam to bond over their shared appreciation of all things Bruce Springsteen.

The last artist to add to the list for tapes 1 is our very own Ash Mann. (http://www.myspace.com/ashmannmusic).

This brings the tally for tapes 1’s musicalness to include the following:

Sam Isaac – www.myspace.com/samisaac
Jason Steel – www.myspace.com/jasonsteelmusic
The Killing Fields of Ontario – http://www.myspace.com/killingfieldsofontario
The Old Romantic Killer Band – http://www.myspace.com/theoldromantickillerband
Ash Mann – http://www.myspace.com/ashmannmusic

Which is, frankly, bloody ace.

January ears by ash

To try and flesh things out a bit and make Cam and I seem less like the Wizard of Oz (fun though that is) I had an ego-attack that made me believe people would care what music we’d been listening to on a monthly basis.

These are not ‘top picks’, merely picks.

Ash:

Bon Iver – For Emma forever ago

Yep. Finally. I’m aware everyone else jumped on this bearded, cabin-bound bandwagon months ago. But I finally took the chance that mass adoration isn’t necessarily a bad thing, and was happily proven right. Much has been made of how and where this album was recorded. Never one for lyrics, mythology etc I will just say that it is a pretty collection of songs. It does something interesting with the ‘indie-folk’ genre that seems to be growing at a pace. I’ve seen it described as ‘lo-fi’ and lonely, which it is a little – although in a basic, subtle way. Probably a couple of songs too long, well-worth a listen nonetheless.

Blur – Think Tank

The announcement in late-2008 that Blur would be reforming in July 2009 for a couple of gigs in Hyde Park got me more excited than I should probably admit (like a giggling school-girl would be about right). Since then I’ve been revisiting their back catalogue. Think Tank is ace, yes it suffers from the inclusion of the Norman Cook-inspired ‘Crazy Beat’, which is more embarrassing than middle-aged uncles stripping and doing the maccarana at a wedding but it also features gems such as ‘Out of Time’, ‘Ambulance’ and ‘Battery in your leg’ some of which sees Blur breaking entirely new ground (for them). Time will tell how successful the upcoming reunion is but their back catalogue still speaks for itself.

Cam is still trying to have an opinion for January…
